Four Staycations and Unique Outings Around the Willamette Valley

By Matt Wastradowski

All over the Willamette Valley, lodgings work to reflect their surroundings in ways big and small. Lumos Wine Company, for instance, repurposed a decades-old cabin-part of a former dude ranch complex-to offer overnight stays on its scenic vineyard outside Corvallis. And Amity Flats, just outside McMinnville and within walking distance of nearby wineries, named each of its five rooms after different soils that support vineyard grapes.

And while spring break has come and gone for most school kids, there's never a bad time to plan your next staycation or overnight getaway around the Willamette Valley. Here are four favorite unique stays around the region.

Abbey Road Farm Silo Suites Bed & Breakfast

The bucolic Abbey Road Farm, just outside Newberg in the heart of the Willamette Valley's wine country, offers the chance to spend the night on a working farm-with several perks and amenities that complement the one-of-a-kind experience.

Abbey Road Farm's Silo Suites Bed & Breakfast, housed in a converted grain silo, sits surrounded by a 42-acre vineyard. The B&B's five suites come with in-room jacuzzi tubs, foam-topped beds, floor heating, and other luxurious amenities.

Stays include a tour of the farm, up-close encounters with the farm's many animals, and a multi-course breakfast. And if you'd like to get cozy, a large fire pit sits outside the inn, as well. Nearby, Abbey Road's tasting room pours the farm's hand-crafted wines, as well as offerings from guest winemakers.

Just 16 miles west of Corvallis, Lumos Wine Company hosts a cabin that recalls the property's heyday as a dude ranch in the 1940s.

The guest cabin at Lumos sits on the winery's 15-acre vineyard and affords views of Marys Peak (the highest point in the Oregon Coast Range) and Marys River, which winds its way through the property. The cabin includes a deck (which sees plenty of sun in summer), a stand-up shower, free Wi-Fi, a cozy kitchenette, and a wood stove for warming up on cool evenings.

Guests may bring a small dog for a $25 fee, and weekend stays between April and November include a free wine tasting at the Lumos tasting room (itself housed in a converted barn).

Tipi Village Retreat

Just a half hour outside Eugene, Tipi Village Retreat offers visitors the chance to slow down, relax, and unwind from the comfort of one of its opulent tipis.

In all, the lodging hosts five tipis, as well as cabins and bedroom suites. Each of the options makes a memorable stay, but the tipis are the star of the show here; all five are outfitted with stone floors, rugs, and cozy beds with down comforters and wool blankets. A centrally located bathhouse serves all tipis and cabins, while the bedroom suite and studio lodging each have private bathrooms. Reflexology and yoga sessions are available for an added fee.

Stays include a locally sourced breakfast, as well; served on either the resort's patio or along Mill Creek, which runs through the property, breakfasts include a mix of organic, free-range eggs, smoked salmon, breads, hot cereals, fresh fruit, and a variety of beverages-including milk, orange juice, coffee, and tea.

Amity Flats

Amity Flats bills itself as a home base for exploring all that Oregon Wine Country has to offer-all just a quick, 10-minute drive south of McMinnville.

Boasting five rooms, Amity Flats is housed in a century-old Masonic lodge-and many of its features (such as the exposed brick and large chandeliers) are holdovers from the building's earliest days. Four rooms come with kitchens-perfect for enjoying hand-picked and -produced bounty from nearby farms-and all come with French Press coffee makers for when you need a pick-me-up in the morning.

On-site attractions and amenities include a second-story patio, secure bike storage, bicycle rentals (available with advance notice), and-when in-season-a variety of fresh items (including eggs, fruit, and honey) from the owners' farm available in-room.
