Your Guide to Mountain Bike Rentals and Shuttles Around Oakridge, the McKenzie River, and Beyond

By Matt Wastradowski

You’ll find hundreds of miles of world-class mountain biking trails in the Willamette Valley—many of which can be enjoyed all year long. In fact, visitors come from around the world to ride through our old-growth forests, admire Cascade peaks, and tackle obstacles installed by passionate volunteers and local groups.

If you’d like to ride our trails, no matter your experience level, plenty of outfitters are eager to help with mountain bike rentals, shuttles to popular trailheads, lessons, and the latest gear for purchase. Prepare for your next epic adventure with these mountain bike rentals and shuttles near Oakridge, the McKenzie River, and beyond.

The cozy community of Oakridge sits along Highway 58, just 45 miles southeast of Eugene, in the heart of the Cascade Range. That remote location, where mountain peaks seem to rise in every direction and trails end right in town, makes Oakridge one of the most popular mountain biking destinations in Oregon. In fact, Oakridge was named a gold-level Ride Center in 2015 by the International Mountain Bicycling Association.

Cascades Outdoor Center is a popular local outfitter that provides shuttles to Hardesty Mountain, Dead Mountain, Larison Rock, and other trails around Oakridge and Westfir. Small groups can also book private shuttles to their favorite trailheads, and Cascades Outdoor Center's guided tour offerings include a ride on the groundbreaking Alpine Trail.

The family-run Cog Wild is another outfitter that caters to new and veteran riders alike; its offerings include half- and full-day guided rides, lessons to help build skills and improve confidence, and shuttles to a handful of beloved trails near Oakridge and Westfir.

The 26.4-mile McKenzie River National Recreation Trail sits about 80 miles east of Eugene, just below the snow-capped peaks of the Cascade Range. The hiking and mountain biking trail rewards riders with gradual downhill descents that wind through an old-growth forest and largely hug the McKenzie River. A variety of trailheads along the McKenzie River Trail make it easy to put together a ride suited to your interests and time constraints, and other local trails in the area tackle ridgelines and forested slopes in the surrounding Cascades.

Get started with Horse Creek Lodge, which specializes in mountain bike rentals (for children and adults) and shuttles to some of the area's most popular trailheads—including the McKenzie River Trail, the O’Leary Trail, and the Olallie Trail. Each shuttle includes post-ride beverages and a hot shower back at the lodge. You can also pitch a tent or stay the night in one of Horse Creek Lodge’s on-site cabins.

Eugene serves as a jumping-off point toward the McKenzie River Corridor, as well as Oakridge and Westfir. Bicycle Way of Life provides plenty of gear and services to help make the most of your trip. The shop offers tune-ups, parts and accessories for sale, and mountain bike rentals for riders of all ages and skill levels; locks and flat-tire repair kits can be added for a small fee.

The Old Cascade Crest Trail Area is a newer mountain-biking destination where several trails traverse the Santiam River Watershed and the Old Cascade Crest. As the name implies, these trails cover the Old Cascades, a mountain range that predates the better-known Cascades by millions of years. Today, the riding area sits about 80 miles east of Eugene and 75 miles east of Albany—not far from the crest of the modern-day mountain range.

We’ve outlined a few favorite trails in the Old Cascade Crest, and we’re excited to see the work that trail builders and advocacy groups are doing to restore the network of century-old trails that offer sweeping views of nearby peaks, meadows of colorful wildflowers, and thrilling ridgeline rides.

If you'd like to explore the still-growing trail network, enlist the services of Trans Cascadia Excursions to help with planning and logistics. The Westfir-based outfitter leads day trips to the Old Cascades for intermediate to advanced riders, as well as daily shuttles and guided outings in the Oakridge area.

Salem sits in the heart of the Willamette Valley and is a bustling hub for two of the region's most popular mountain biking destinations. The legendary Black Rock mountain biking trails sit about 30 miles west of Oregon's capital city, nestled in the Oregon Coast Range foothills, and the growing network of mountain bike trails at Silver Falls State Park can be found about 24 miles to the east.
