You might know the Willamette Valley for its world famous wines. But did you know that the valley is home to the largest dahlia grower in the United States? Swan Island Dahlias, located in Canby, has been in operation for more than 90 years and ships cut flowers and tubers worldwide. Today, the farm is one of the marquee stops along the self-guided South Clackamas Farm Loop, one of several food trails and farm loops in the Willamette Valley.
In 2023, the Swan Island Dahlias festival will run 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily (closed on Mondays and Tuesdays) throughout August and September. As part of the fun, visitors can walk through nearly 40 acres of colorful fields, where more than 370 varieties of dahlia will be in bloom; other attractions include a gift shop, food carts (open daily), live music (on Saturdays and Sundays), and dahlia-related classes (available with pre-registration).
"During the festival there are more than 400 floral arrangements to view, culture talks, demonstrations and gorgeous fields to stroll," said Heather Schloe, manager and third-generation grower. "My favorite part of the festival is visiting with all the visitors and sharing our love for dahlias."
"Each year we introduce about 10 new varieties," said Heather. "We have three named so far, but they will all be officially named and introduced at our annual Dahlia Festival."

While you're admiring dahlias in the Canby area, make time for some of the other exciting attractions elsewhere on the South Clackamas Farm Loop. In all, the loop features 20 stops that showcase the creativity and variety of farmers in the northern Willamette Valley-including TMK Creamery, where visitors can tour the facilities, nosh on cheesy foods, and meet the cows responsible for it all; Puddin’ River Chocolates, crafting addictively sweet confections; and more.
TMK Creamery is a popular stop along the South Clackamas Farm Loop.
